Green. I was sick of it. For one thing, my ebony coat stood out against it horribly. Another thing, It was all I had seen for over a month. All I had eaten was field mouse. I was sick of that as well. I needed a change. I was wandering aimlessly, not really hungry, but not full either. Sort of thirsty, but not parched. Sleepy but not dead on my feet. I was just right, but when I heard the scuffling of another mouse, it was hard to go against my instincts and leave it. My sharp ears gave me the tiny critters position. I could almost feel it’s heart beat through the ground. I turned silently to my right and pushed aside a clump of the sickly grass to see the mouse. I guess it was more mice than mouse though. There was two of them sniffing noses. It was so odd. I just watched, all the while my instincts telling me that, ‘Here is a good dinner! Catch it!’ But for some reason, I couldn’t. The mice seemed to be enjoying each others company. One of them lifted its nose just as the breeze changed and brought my scent towards them. They turned and high-tailed it into the grass. I snapped out of my trance and growled at my stupidity. A perfect dinner. Wasted. Why had I stopped? Was it because I had not seen another of my kind since I woke those long six months before? Was I just realising that I would go insane if I didn’t have any contact with another? No! That was absurd! I had lasted this long on my own. I could last my whole life like this. But a little voice in my head was not so sure. How long could I last? Word Count-303 Muse-Okay Notes-nope nothin to say '.'

Green. Endless rolling green plains... It was wonderful, sure, there wasn't any cover but if you were a inhabitant of the land then what did you have to worry about? Absolutely nothing. The predators were trained not to eat you so you barely had to worry about keeping watch... but still...
Over the green hills a slim body popped up and looked around. The animal was light brown in color, it had long ears that were sitting erect on its head as it listened for predators. Seeing, of course, that there were none the rabbit lowered itself back down to all fours.
At her leisure, the rabbit started nibbling at the grass. Taking her time to chew and savor each bit. Then, something else caught her eye, a nice patch of dandelions. The doe smiled in pleasure and hop-walked over to them, whereupon she started to nibble at the yellow flowers. Her mother should have named her dandelion since she absolutely loved them. Then again, how was her mother to know that her daughter would love dandelions?
As she nibbled the dandelions a sound caught her ear. Had that been running she heard? No, it was stopped now. Then, she heard the sound of a growl. Instinctively she sat up on her haunches and looked around, not far away was a black fox with a white-tipped tail. Her heart started beating a mile-a-minute as her instincts took over. She stamped her foot in alarm and then tried to bolt for the nearest hole, then she remembered that there were no holes. In that seconds she gained control of her instincts and ran casually back over to the dandelions and started eating again.
Silly fox, getting her instincts all worked up when she had no need for them to be. After all, the fox was from her tribe, wasn't he? If he wasn't he wouldn't be here and if he was an invader then she would alert the nearest warrior and have him expelled. Although, she truly thought that he was in the tribe. She hoped so, for she was sitting a little too close to get away in case he tried to catch and eat her.

The mice were gone. Well no loss, I wasn’t hungry anyways. I turned and flicked my white tipped tail in annoyance.
Then another scent reached my nose. Rabbit! I was part of the Western tribe but I had to eat. “You really don’t. Your not that hungry,” I hate it when I am right.
So instead of stalking the rabbit, I crashed through the grass and right up to the poor beast. “You’re hardly more than a mouth full anyways,” I spat at the animals feet.
It was a wonder the creature didn’t die of a heart attack right then and there. I stopped talking for a second and reached out my nose to sniff the creature.
Female like me. Young, and probably knew every thing about her past. I spat again. “I apologize for that. My name is… “ I looked into the tall weeds and then turned back to the rabbit, “Hold that thought,”
I sprang away from the probably terrified animal and landed on a vole. After killing it, I surveyed it. Old, tough, stringy, but different. I could handle it.
I walked back to the place that the rabbit had been and sat down, tearing into my lunch. I had been right, it was stringy and when I swallowed the first bite, I almost choked.
Spluttering and hacking, finally got the piece of vole out. “Blah, I hate it when my dinner is old,” I was talking to myself but if the rabbit was listening she would hear it too.
I took another bite and chewed carefully, before saying, “Right, so I am Shadow, who are you?”
I looked up at the rabbit, then back down at my vole. The rabbit would probably taste better. Then again, I never did like rabbit, and I had just introduced myself to it.

Before, she had time to even turn around the ebony shape was right in front of her. Her dark eyes looked up at the creature, the fear had left her. Now, there was only a deathly calm, if she was to be the predator's prey then she wouldn't cry about it but take the death like a brave doe.
“You’re hardly more than a mouth full anyways,”

Well... That wasn't something that a predator who was about to eat their prey would say... Was she lucky and this fox wasn't going to eat her? She was proved right when the ebony head extended forward to sniff her. Anisth'hain blinked in slight surprise but extended her own nose so she could sniff the fox. Hmm... Female and around her age. At least she had a little in common with the predator... That was a little reasurring, she supposed. Anisth's ears twitched as she saw the fox leap away but she didn't know what the fox was after. She found out soon enough though... It was a vole. The doe felt her heart twist in sadness as the rodent was killed. She knew that the other animal had to eat and some part of her was glad that the vole would be going in her place... But still... She shivered and tried to shake away the sadness, at least it had been old and probably about to die anyway. When the fox started coughing she leaned forward and looked slightly concered. “Blah, I hate it when my dinner is old,” She knew that the fox hadn't been talking to her, but with ears as large as she had it was hard not to. She also knew that the fox was fine, she had just got a bit of bad meat apparently. So, politely she started nibbling at dandelions again so that she wouldn't be staring at the fox. Some found that rude. “Right, so I am Shadow, who are you?” Anisth lifted her head and looked at the fox, Shadow. "I am, Anisth'hain, but if you prefer you can call me Windsong." Her name meant Windsong in the rabbit language of Lapine. Therefore, other animals sometimes had a hard time pronouncing her name so she offered the alternative for them to use. So, um, Shadow, are you a part of the Plains Tribe?" She asked casually. Anisth'hain really wanted to know the answer to the question. Being around untrained predators made her nervous. Once the vole was down and there was no more risk of me coughing up a lung, I listened to the rabbits words. Keeping a detached look on my face, I thought up answers as she talked. Windsong. It was a pretty name, but I wasn’t going to let her know that. Her real name sounded odd, like a different language. “I wish I could remember,” I thought to myself. “I mean how often is it that a fox wakes up not knowing anything?” I jerked my thoughts back to the rabbit as she continued to talk. “So, um, Shadow, are you a part of the Plains Tribe?"At this I laughed. “So that’s what this dump is? Huh, then I guess I am part of the Plains Tribe,” I laughed again but this time it was only to cover up my dismay. How had I lived here for over six months and not run into any of these “tribe members”? Unless they were all rabbits! I thought that it would easy to fight my way out if they were all fluff buckets. But then I remembered that Windsong had asked if I was one, they had to be all types of animals! My laugh stopped at this thought. Where were they? Why hadn’t I ever seen them? Was I a part of them before? My head started to hurt. It happened a lot with me. I would think too deeply about something and my head ached. I didn’t know it but right then, my gaze was fixed into the distance and the fur on the back of my neck started to stand on end. I just sat there for a minute or two, then I snapped my gaze back to Windsong. “Why were you watching me before,” I snarled at her, referring to when I had lost the mice. I was starting to think that this rabbit might be more down to earth than most. I couldn’t afford to get to close. Who knew what might happen. Word Count:344 Muse: Okay Notes:nope

“So that’s what this dump is? Huh, then I guess I am part of the Plains Tribe,” Why was this fox laughing? And was she serious? How could Shadow have not known that she was in the Plains Tribe? She was here, after all and she hadn't been chased away.
Anisth'hain's dark eyes flashed with confusion for an instant, then it went away. Hmph. Predators. She would never get why they did the things they did, so she just shrugged and wiped her two front paws over her nose to clean as rabbits do. When she was done, both of her front paws lowered down to the ground and she looked back at the fox. Now, she was finished with the dandelions and if Shadow wasn't there she probably would have left to a hole somewhere in the Plains. But as it was she stayed for the sake of having company, even if it was the company of an odd fox.
As the doe watched the fox, she noticed that the ebony fur on the back of her neck started to raise up. Anisth'hain blinked up at the animal and looked half concerned and half fearful. What could possibly be wrong? “Why were you watching me before,” Anisth'hain backed up a little bit and her ears flicked nervously. She had no reason to be afraid of the words as she wasn't doing anything wrong... However, the snarl was almost too much for her; her instincts were screaming at her to run.
"Well, I watched you because I wasn't sure if you were an intruder or not. I've never seen you around before and it's better to be safe than sorry... Especially if you're a rabbit like me."
|
She forced herself to talk to the fox, but if the other female didn't stop snarling and doing such things as that, she wasn't sure how much longer she could force herself to stick around. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

I watched the doe back away from me in fear. For a second I let the feeling of power wash over me. Then I sighed inwardly, maybe I could be mean sometimes, but the fear that I had instilled in the little animal was not satisfying. “Hey, I am not going to eat you. If I was you would already be dead,”
I was sub-consciously going over an idea in my head. What if, no! That would be absurd! But before I could stop myself, the thought was out of my mouth and floating in the air for all to hear. “Do you have any one you need to return to? Or perhaps somewhere that you need to go?” What was I thinking! Of course everyone knew that rabbits were smart, but would she be able to help me? Did I even want her helping me? I could find a fox who would be willing couldn’t I? But that little voice that stopped me from eating the mice spoke again, “You haven’t even seen the fur of a fox since you woke up. What is guaranteeing that you will find one now?”I flopped onto the ground and began to wash my paws, trying to get a small sliver of grass from between my paws. My thoughts whirled while I waited for Windsong to speak again. She did seem to know more about this place than I did, and the option of eating her if she annoyed me was a plus. But could I eat something that I had first talked to and then told that I wouldn’t? Probably not. She would be good at exploring small spaces for me. It was also common knowledge that rabbits knew most of the berries and foods in the places that they lived and traversed. But why would she want to travel with a fox! And one who did not know a thing about her past! Maybe she would come, maybe she wouldn’t. If not I was sure I would find someone to come with me. But then that dratted inner voice spoke again, “Oh really?” Word Count 353 Muse Hehe Notes

Anisth'hain watched the fox. Almost certain that the next words spoken would have some sort of growl or snarl but she was proved wrong. She almost sighed in reliefe as they were spoken. “Hey, I am not going to eat you. If I was you would already be dead,” She did have a point there... At first, Anisth couldn't even have run away if she wanted to; the fox had gotten too close to her. So, she decided to believe Shadow's words. Anisth'hain forced herself to sit still and be brave. She stared at the fox straight on, showing that she wouldn't try to get away anymore. Although, a small part of her still didn't like being so close to a homba(fox).
“Do you have any one you need to return to? Or perhaps somewhere that you need to go?” Was this fox seriously asking her this? She really wanted to travel with a rabbit? A rabbit? What could Anisth'hain possibly offer her? It wasn't protection and she was sure that Shadow knew the landscape just as good as she did... Or did she... Or maybe the fox just wanted to offer her protection, even though she didn't really have anywhere to go.
Anisth raised to her hind legs and hopped forward a little so she could better study the ebony creature before her. Then, she spoke calmly and carefully. Choosing her words carefully. "To answer both of your questions, no. I have no warren and I live nowhere, I stay in abandoned holes at night whenever I can."
|
She said. "Although, rabbits are generally social creatures and we value company highly, especially us does. So, I wouldn't mind having a bit of company while I traveled around. So I'll come with you." Shadow didn't seem like the loud sort, the kind of person that annoyed her. In fact, Shadow seemed a bit quiet like herself so the companionship could possibly work. Granted that the fox didn't try to eat her, but she believed that the homba wouldn't. Anisth'hain lowered herself down to all fours again, she hoped that she had made the right choice. I listened to the does’ long winded answer in disbelief. First at my initial question, then at her answer. Was there something not right in her head? My inner voice spoke again in that taunting tone, “Well you asked her to come and now she is coming, but Shadow,” it drew my name out long as if calling me back to it. Where would I go? It’s inside my head! “Shadow where are you going? Hmmm. All you know is that you want to find your past,”
I shook my head to clear it while my thoughts had a verbal battle. Did it matter if I had no idea where to look? Of course it did! I couldn’t just wander aimlessly until I found something or someone who knew me! Yes I could! It would just take longer. But what if you really are alone now.
At the last comment I stopped thinking. Then to finalize the train of thought, I added one last thing. I have a rabbit to travel with, that is someone who knows me, sort of.Hoping I had not been staring into space for too long, I looked at Windsong and said “Well come on then,” I turned and trotted off in the direction that I had come. I stopped and looked back at the doe once I had reached the place where I had seen the two mice. I did not know if she could keep up with me, but I would soon find out. I shivered as a wisp of cloud passed over the sun, blocking the spring heat for just a moment. But the cloud moved again and the heat returned. Sighing I flicked my tail and continued on. Word Count-300 Muse- :/ Notes- Underline and strike through are thoughts. It's kinda confusing, but I think it's okay. Oh and Italics are initial thoughts.

At first the doe thought that the fox had changed her mind... Why was she taking so long to respond? She finally figured out that a rabbit wouldn't be able to help too much with traveling? Or was she just crazy? Anisth'hain hoped not... She didn't want to agree to travel with a crazy fox. The rabbit's head gave a slight questioning tilt as she waited for the fox to answer, then it came.
“Well come on then," Anisth'hain's ears twitched then she hopped after the fox. Her normal lolloping gait that she used to walk slowly wouldn't work for keeping up with a trotting fox. She had to actually hop to keep up, but since she wasn't running she wouldn't get tired so easily. If she had to, she could actually hop all day without getting tired.
When Shadow stopped; Anisth'hain, out of habit, lifted onto her hind legs and looked around for danger. She didn't see anything and thus rubbed her paws over her nose and glanced up at the sky. The sun was covered by a few clouds now, and it made the temperature seem slightly colder. Anisth'hain wished she was in a burrow right about now... A warm burrow full of warm rabbit bodies... She remembered a time when she could curl up against her family to keep warm. Now she had no one to curl up against, unless the fox allowed her to curl up against her when they rested... But she doubted it. And she didn't didn't really know if she'd trust the fox that much, especially after they had just met.
Anisth'hain looked at the fox when she heard her sigh and with a tail flick Shadow set off again. The rabbit hopped after the fox easily catching up and hopping right beside the fox. She didn't speak or say anything, she just listened to the wind and the soft pawsteps of her companion. She wasn't the type to initiate a conversation, she actually enjoyed the silence that she lived with most of the time. Although, she did enjoy talking as well but would hold her peace if the fox so wished to do so. She didn't mind either way.

I kept my pace steady for most of the day, not saying anything to the rabbit. The sun was starting to set and I knew that I should probably stop and find some water and shelter for the night.
“We will stop when we find water,” I announced, then I thought for a second and added, “Unless you can keep going of course,”
I knew that rabbits could travel at a fast pace for long periods of time, but I didn’t know if they could go non stop. I certainly couldn’t, but sometimes I would push myself to keep moving. Other times, I would stop at mid-day to have a short nap. Now that there was another being with me, I was not sure that she would agree to my odd times.
My thoughts were cut off by the scent of water. I veered left and found a large puddle, not far from where we had been trotting.
Without looking at Windsong, I walked to the water source and bent my head to quench my thirst. It tasted like dirt, but water was water.
Lifting my dripping muzzle, I smelled the air. No scent markers that I could find, and almost no one had been here in the past day or two. There was one smell that did catch my attention though, mouse. I sighed and glanced at my traveling companion.
“I’ll be back,”
I snuck off into the grass and pounced on the tiny creature, killing it quickly. It was a good catch, not so young that I felt bad, and not so old that it tasted awful. Knowing how much it must sicken the young female for me to eat my diet in front of her, so instead of bringing the mouse back to the puddle, I crouched where I had caught the morsel and dug in.
It tasted good, and after eating what I could, I took the remains far from where we would be sleeping. I didn’t want any scavengers to find us.
Sighing contentedly, I began to trot back to Windsong.

As the day wore on, it was obvious to the doe that her companion preferred silence. Which, as was stated before, she didn't mind one bit. So as it was, she hopped alongside her companion at the trotting pace they were going. Although her legs were starting to get tired and exhaustion was setting in. Rabbits are not creatures that can go for extremely long periods of time without rest, they are animals that stay at burrows and don't wander very far away. Anisth'hain was different in most rabbits in the fact that she didn't stay at a burrow but wandered around, that made her a bit more conditioned to the traveling life... But there was only so much she could take...
“We will stop when we find water, unless you can keep going of course,” Water? She didn't need any water, all the moisture she needed was in the grass and plants that she ate. She only drank water if the grass she ate was especially dry, which wasn't the case that day. No. What she needed was rest. However, she wouldn't admit that and feel as if she were being weak in front of Shadow."I can keep going, I don't need any water."
|
So, she trudged along beside the fox. Slipping more and more into a dazed and dream-like state the farther they went. Such a state would have been suicide if she were alone, elil(predators) would have closed in and ended her life quickly. The smell of water assailed her nose but she wasn't going to go to it until she saw Shadow heading towards it. Still in her dazed state she followed right up to the water's edge but she didn't drink. She just looked at it then at her companion, as she waited. When Shadow lifted her head she was expecting her to walk so she could follow but the next words stopped her in her tracks. “I’ll be back,”The rabbit sat and watched as the black fox walked away. As she waited she extended a foreleg and aimlessly licked it... There was no purpose to do so but in her state she didn't care. After a bit she seemed to sink towards the ground, it was quite obvious now that the rabbit wasn't in the best traveling shape and as her eyelid's started to lower into involuntary sleep she thought she saw the faintest shape of a fox coming back. However, all thoughts of being thought weak in front of her companion had evaporated... Her tiredness had taken over everything. Notes: Aww... poor Anisth is tired ): [/blockquote][/blockquote]
