The sun was shining bright and warm over the vast expanse of the Emerald Forest. Birds were chirping cheerfully in the trees, some even picking at the ground below for an afternoon meal. The forest was clearly coming back to life after the harsh and frigid winter; ferns, leaves, and various other types of vegetation were sprouting anew in the welcomed warmth of spring.
Blissfully trotting through the damp leaves upon the forest floor was a pine marten, a smile glued to his lips. "Ahh, what a lovely morning." he chirped to himself, beginning to hum a few moments after his words were spoken.
His gaze wandering to the treetops, Finn couldn't help but sigh with relief as he caught sight of the many budding leaves. He was now totally positive that winter had finally passed, and spring was now upon the forest. "Heh, sure took long enough for spring to arrive..." he mumbled under his breath, turning his attention back to the trail in front of him.
With the occasional hop over fallen debris in his path, Finn's travels were overall quite uneventful for a change. Instead of looking for trouble as he usually did, he was determined to get to his destination... which, was actually coming into view.
Prancing through a clump of ferns, Finn came to a halt in the clearing now before him. Soft brown gaze upon the stretch of water in the center of said clearing, he murmured its name: "Lake Chaera."
Taking a few more steps forward until he was at the water's edge, he cheerfully looked across the lake's still waters. "'S been a long time since I visited here, eh?" he said to himself, his grin showing no signs of disappearing.
With a wave of his bushy tail, Finn turned to a nearby willow tree and nimbly climbed the trunk to halt at the first branch thick enough to hold his weight. "As much as I'd like to take a swim, I think I want to relax a bit first."
Shifting his position until he was comfortable, Finn turned to face the lake and contentedly let his eyes close, all the while listening to the water lap against the shore, the birdsong, and the humming of the bees.

eyes wide, heart thumping under his blanket of fur, and ear perked up in alert. the small grizzly bear trudged on, clearly following the right path, or at least he thought was the right path, to his destination. his paws thumped lightly against the ground and his little tail was strapped to his rear. his shoulder sank almost over his shoulders, as the grizzly dipped his head, squinting his eyes, trying to catch one little view of his destination. none other then Lake Chaera.
the sun was rather bright and warm over the bear- and half of the world he set foot in now. he didn't quite like it, but in the distance, many sounds of animals growling, and birds chirping their song were heard through those ears of his. shaking his head slightly, his eyes widened, not in amazement, or in surprise, but in excitement. even he did not know why his stomach flipped with nervousness, or why his heart raced within his chest. all he knew is that he wanted to go jump in the refreshing lake, or rest by the trees that hang over the pool of water.
his tongue, unexpectedly, started to loll out of his mouth, and rested on sharp teeth. pants escaped his lips as they widened slightly. his pace grew quicker in speed. thump thump thump was heard as each paw hit the ground lightly. eager to see the magnificent view. water started to form in the grizzy's eyes, the wind hit him hastily as he shot slowly down his path.
hopefully . . just hopefully the lake was near now . .
with one shake of his ruffled fur, the grizzly continued on. his eyes were now squinted, because of the wind hitting them fiercely. he didn't fancy the water circling up in his eyes. he had to blink numerous times to lessen the water count in his eyes. it had even fuzzed up his view. and yet, he tumbled slightly. only regaining his balance after one paw came swiftly around to put pressure against the ground in front of him.
his jaw had snapped shut, his tongue no longer revealed itself, and will not again on his journey. his eyes quivered as they remained squinted, but took a quick glance to the right before turning forward again. a glimmer in the distance .. was that it? was that the one thing he had been searching for? it had to be. it just did ..
and there, it was. "Finally," Hakod started muttering under the breath he had to spare, "i've made it. Lake Chaera." what used to be a weak frown turned into a weaker smile. only then had he realized how tired he was, and took a few breathes, panting hard, he leaned his head downward to do this.
after receiving all the breath he needed again, he shook his head once more, and raised it quite high in triumph. "Made it." he said, the smile widening on his muzzle, eyes growing wider, head rising slightly.
he rose his paw a few centimeters off the ground, and stepped forward. the water glimmered, and looked just as tasty to him. licking his lips, he made another attempt forward. only then had he jogged up to the water's edge. leaning his head down, tongue rolled out to touch the water's surface, Hakod sipped up some fresh water, and leaned back up. the cold, refreshing water sunk down his throat.
he turned on the balls of his paws, and turned his silvery eyes upward. shall he .. what, take a nap? nah, do energetic right now ... then what? he had no clue whatsoever.
suddenly, his eyes widened, and only then did he realize he was alone .. realized he wasn't the one enjoying the moment. for, not to far away from where the grizzly was standing, was a Pine Marten, a lay on a rock. "Er," started Hakod lazily, "hello?"

Humming quietly from his willow branch, Finn dozed comfortably in the warm spring afternoon. Occasionally flicking his bushy tail at a passing gnat or fly, Finn was immensely enjoying himself despite the fact that he was simply relaxing. "Nothin' like enjoyin' a nice spring day, eh?" he chuckled to himself, rolling onto his back.
Just as he was about to begin his off-key ditty again, Finn heard quite a peculiar noise; some creature panting and murmuring to himself. Dark eyes shooting open in curiosity, Finn scrambled back to his paws and gripped the bark tightly. Craning forward, the pine marten quickly spotted the source of the sounds; a large grizzly bear, apparently quite tired from his trek to the lake.
A wide grin spreading across his face, Finn scrambled down the willow and bounced over to the hulking form of the bear. "Weeelll, what have we here? Looks like I'm not the only one who wants to enjoy this fine day at the lake!" he chirped, coming to a halt mere inches away from the grizzly's large paws. "I see you're quite tired... had a long trek here, eh?" he continued, completely dismissing the fact that the bear could easily crush him if he wanted. "I enjoyed a nice stroll here too, let me tell you. Nothing a nice nap in the willows couldn't fix, though."
Yawning, Finn flounced over to a boulder near the lake's edge. It was quite flat, and most of it over hanged the lake's waters. The lake was particularly deep here as well, and if one were to look close enough, could see fleeting glimpses of silver. "I'm feeling just dandy now, though. That said, let's see how good I am at fishin'..." he finished, voice trailing off as he focused his gaze on the glassy surface of the lake.
Finn stood statue-like on the boulder for quite some time, his only focus the water beneath his paws. Suddenly, his little paw shot forward in a blur, and for a moment the fish flopped on the water's surface. But alas, it slipped right through the pine marten's claws. His excitement turning to disappointment, Finn suddenly spun around with renewed interest to the bear. "Hey! You're a bear, right? Bears like fish, right? D'you think you can gimme a demonstration on how t'catch a fish?" he asked in a rush, his eyes wide and glimmering with an enthusiasm only he could muster.

hakod, still frozen in place, a sort of surprised expression planted on his face, shook it to the side gently as the world came back into focus for him. the pine martin was speaking up a storm, and what was the bear doing? staring at the small weasel-like creature. he wasn't surprised to see someone else here. it was a sunny day, and some other animal must've been hot, or thirsty, so they traveled up to the Lake, much like he did himself.
blinking slightly, he leaned his head forwards, ears alert, trying to catch every word the mine marten said, although he spoke in a quick, non-understandable manner. but the grizzly couldn't help but grin. this was interesting, thought hakod, how this tiny little things wouldn't cower in fear. but, hakod wasn't a bear who would do that sort of thing.
so the grin remained glued to his lips as he tried to speak numerous times, but the pine martin kept speaking. "Er," was the only thing that slipped the bear's muzzle. then he caught himself and straightened, the grin hadn't ceased. "Well, sure, I guess. It is quite .. sunny today .. so .. Right!" he said quickly, stumbling over words to say, but added, "Tired? oh . . yeah. I suppose. The trek here wasn't as bad .. but quite tiring .. yeah!" he heaved in a breath, and exhaled in a short sigh. his ears pricked up slightly more, and he rose his head, making his body more stern-like, unmovable, or at least he tried.
before saying more, or listening to the pine martin speak more, the grizzly's silver eyes followed the small weasel like creature as it scurried to a small rock at the edge of the lake. the pine martin spoke again, and hakod stood there for a moment, staring at the small creature before realizing it was his turn to speak. "Oh! Er - okay, I'll just watch .. over here." the grizzly heaved as he made his way to the water's edge again. the grass skidded with his paws. he chose a spot near the bolder-ish rock that the pine martin was a lay on, watching it with excitement, no curiosity, even he did not know. he just sat there, eyes wide.
as he watched the weasel like creature shot his paw into the lake, he jumped slightly, only with the reaction of surprise on his face. the pine martin had one fish hooked on his claws. only minutes, or seconds, had the fish shook itself out and flopped back into the water. "Wow! Close one!" said hakod excitedly before the pine martin rushed up to him and asked a question in that rushed manner of his.
What? oh .. oh yeah .. I'm a bear, and sure, I like fish, but I've never .. er, I mean, sure thing!" he got up slowly, a amused expression covered his face as he took one glance down at the water before returning his attention to the pine martin again. but the look on his face had nothing to do with what he felt on the inside. scared, nervous, many others. he had never really caught a fish before, how was he going to show this .. this pine martin?
the grizzly cleared his throat, then began speaking in somewhat of the same rushed manner of the pine martin's, "Okay! So I'll show you - no, just look down here - how to, er, catch a fish, right? Well - what's your name - oh, here, just .. watch ..." yes, he stammered, but he did then turn to the water. he was going to do this .. somehow. somehow ..
he glanced wearily at the pine martin - for he had not received his name yet - then back down at the water. "Here it goes .." he kept muttering. he straightened, then shot his head into the water. it was wet under there, and he could see clearly if opening his eyes. the water was fresh and clean, perfect. if only there were a fish around .. and there it was. his eyes widened, and he leaned in deeper .. only centimeters away from the fish now .. and it had not seen him yet. perfect.
he snapped at it, but it squirmed and swam away quickly. there goes his chance. frowning slightly, he rose his head out of the water, his fur wet, and his eyes stinging. "Sorry I couldn't - they were just to fast - I wasn't fast enough . ." he grumbled, shaking his head, his eyes glued shut. "Wanna just . . try again on your own?" he added.

Finn energetically hopped with excitement as he followed the bear back to the boulder. "Ohh, are you good at fishin'? Better than me, probably. Y'know, since bears are famous fer catchin' fish and such..." he rambled, bushy tail sweeping to and fro.
As he watched the grizzly settle down on the edge of the boulder, however, Finn stopped speaking and instead watched the bear's every movement intently. The marten himself settled down in the grass right next to the large rock, glancing from the water to the bear.
As his appointed fishing mentor dunked his head under the water, Finn automatically realized that something wasn't quite right. "Uh... I'm almost positive you wait fer the fish to come close, then you go with the claws..." he stated hesitantly, rising to his paws to get a better look at the bear.
Moments later, Finn watched as the blurred form of the bear's head moved forward in a snapping motion, and the silver scales of the fish flash back to the depths.
Shortly thereafter, the grizzly brought his head out of the water, his soaking head fur giving him an oddly comical appearance... to Finn, anyway. Suppressing a laugh, Finn padded over to the bear as he heard him mumbling something along the lines of the fish being too fast.
"Well, yeah... they're fish. But it's okay big guy; we can learn to fish together, eh?" Finn offered, adding one of his ridiculous grins to the mix. "Oh, and by the way; name's Finn. You?"

"Good at fishing? Please, I'm, er, excellent at fishing! Y'know .. since I'm a .. a bear, yeah, right." hakod said proudly before dunking his ehad in the water. he couldn't believe how excited this pine martin was. and how was hakod to disappoint him? he hesitated for a few seconds then shook it off, grinning down at the pine martin. "Famous, yeah!" he said, holding back the urge to laugh. then, after watching the animal make his way to a nearby boulder, and soon settle himself down on it, hakod nodded shortly, then slipped his head into the water.
the bear could hear the pine martin speak when under the water, so he shook his head slightly, his fur, which was floating almost everywhere, swished along with his movement, making him almost laugh aloud. bubbles emerged from his sealed mouth and nose. he couldn't speak underwater obviously, or only gurgle sounding noised would emerge from his muzzle, so he didn't give into replying to the small animal outside the water. but .. the pine martin had a point, hadn't he? claws .. not teeth .. a better suggestion, action. but his head was already dunked under the water, so...
after he had brought his head back out of the water, and stared at the pine martin hopelessly, muttering words of excuse, the animal laughed and scurried up to him. those silvery eyes followed the pine martin as it made it's movements towards him. his head still dripping wet. the wetness soaked through his fur, pressing against his skin, which made him shudder. it was rather cold. but the sun was already flashing on the bear, filling his body with more warmth.
the talkative pine martin spoke again, and the grizzly returned his focus back to the small creature. as he, or, as hakod just learned, Finn finished speaking, that weird grin placed upon his face (which made hakod glare at him oddly) hakod couldn't help but grin more. "Oh .. er, yeah. Most defiantly, Finn!" he exclaimed excitedly, bouncing to his feet in an excited type of manner. he continued to stare at Finn, "Oy, Finn, we're we going to learn that type of stuff?" he added in question, tipping his head to the right slightly. "Oh .. and the name's Hakod, by the way." he added quickly with a short grin.
his excitement was high, and his heart pounded within his chest. it was if his stomach flipped with his excitement. it tingled for some strange reason, but he kept his focus on finn, before again padding forward. for some time, he continued forward, until he turned on the balls of his paws, and skidded up to Finn again. his grin was weak now, suppressing into more of a seriously weak smile. awaiting what finn would say, hakod lowered himself in a sit once more. his silvery eyes blinked as they remained glued on finn.

As the bear finally introduced himself by name, Finn's already wide grin spread even more. "Pleasure t'meet ya, Hakod!" he chirped, his voice in its usual high-pitched tone.
Waving his bushy tail, Finn returned to the previous subject: figuring out how to fish. Pine martens by nature didn't have a clue as to how to fish. Everything they needed were in the trees or the ground, not in the water. Sure, there might have been a few who figured out how to catch one of the scaly creatures, but Finn clearly wasn't one of them.
"Hmm... lemme try and think here a minute..." he mumbled, dark eyes distant as he tried to conjure up some sort of plan. Bah, if only I could remember how that other bear did it last year. That 'un really knew how t'fish. he thought angrily, squinting as he tried to summon the memory. All that came up was a hazy image of a bear swiping at a river.
Right... guess we'll just have to figure it out ourselves and hope we get lucky. Sighing with exasperation, Finn brought his focus back to the real world, and the grizzly sitting in front of him. "Well, looks like we'll jus' have to figure this out on our own. I can't think of a darn thing on how to fish." he said, getting back to his paws. "C'mon, let's give fishin' one more try. And if it doesn't go so well, we can jus' go berry pickin' instead. Much easier than hunting fish, fer sure." he called over his shoulder as he ambled toward the designated fishing spot.
Climbing back on top of the large rock, Finn made himself comfortable once more at its edge, his eyes staring at the rippling waters of the lake. "All we gotta do now is wait for one of the little stinkers to show up." he murmured, a slight grin on his unusually serious features.
