Thank Heaven it was night time. I awoke, stretched a little and stepped toward the entrance of my den. I enjoyed my life in the desert, but it was quite unforgiving. I was nocturnal, which helped out…immensely. After checking to make sure the coast was clear I stepped out into the moonlight. It had been more than twelve hours since my last meal, and frankly, I was hungry. I trotted deeper into the lands, toward an oasis that was located close by; here I knew I had food and water. At the water’s edge I paused and then ducked behind a rock.
Slaking its thirst was a caracal, perhaps the same one I watched take Shasta’s life when we were still young. I stayed behind the rock, glancing around its edge every once in a while to judge when it was safe for me to come back into the open. About five minutes after I had arrived I watched the cat head out in search of its meal for the night as well. When I was certain it was gone I continued toward the water. Taking a few quick sips I heard something beneath the ground. Looking down I pin pointed its location, just to my right.
Smiling I moved toward the spot as softly as I could and then started digging at the sand. If my plan worked, the little morsel would come right to my muzzle. Ten minutes after I started digging, I was lifting up my head with a kangaroo rat clamped in my jaws. At least it constituted about as much of a meal as I needed at the present time. Carrying my winnings back toward my den, I leaped up to my favourite rock outcropping to eat my meal in relative safety. When I finished the last bite I sat up and started looking around my small little piece of land.
For once, in a rather long time, my desert home was relatively quiet. An occasional owl would flit by, thank Heaven again that those owls weren’t Eagle owls. In the distance I watched another fennec moving across its land. It looked my direction only once and then continued on its way. I didn’t often take kindly to others intruding on my piece of land, but on the rather rare occasion, I did enjoy the company of a few other fennecs. I smiled as I lay down, tucking my nose under my tail, I dozed off, ever alert for approaching beings.
